Rene Byrd’s arm had a small spot that looked different. It was purple and white and itched. That spot had developed because a melanocyte had grown a cancerous tumor. He was told by his family doctor that he had a melanoma.

Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin. Melanin gives dark or tan color to the skin. But, when one of these cells gets out of control, it can produce one of the most dangerous cancers known. And more than 53,5454 people are told that they have melanoma every year just inside the United States of America.

Causes of Malignant Melanoma

The most common cause of melanoma known is excess sunlight. When melanoma was first studied, it was found that people who labored out of doors were much more likely to get melanoma. Then it was found out that mostly people who had gotten a sunburn causing blisters were those who tended to go on to get a malignant melanoma.

People with fair skin are much more likely to get melanoma. This may be due to the fact that they are more likely to get skin damage by sun exposure. But, this is not a hard and fast fact.

Those who have lots of nevi (moles) are at higher risk for melanoma, particularly those who have over 50. Also, those with a particular type of mole called a dysplastic nevus are at higher risk.

Some people have had other skin cancers successfully treated including basal cell carcinoma. Those people are more likely to get melanoma.

If you have had other family members that have had melanoma, then you are much more likely to get a melanoma as well.

Finally, those who are immune compromised get melanomas much more often. Whether a person has AIDS, an organ transplant needing medications to curtail the immune system or others using those medications, that person will have a higher risk.

One published case exemplified the role of genetics in melanoma. A man who was a chimera got melanoma. A chimera is someone who has different parts of the body having two different sets of DNA. This might happen when twins are formed and somehow join into one body. The man in the journal article had large metastatic lumps of melanoma tumors on one side of his body and the other side had none at all!

How to Identify a Malignant Melanoma

The only way to be sure whether a bump on your skin is a melanoma or not is to have your doctor take it off and get it studied by a pathologist. However, there are some ways to know if you should be suspicious of one of those lumps or bumps.

Uneven Border – A melanoma will usually have an irregular border. The average mole has a sharp border. You can point to any spot on your skin and say for sure whether it is part of the mole or not. This is not the case with melanoma.

Assymetric Shape – The melanoma lesions typically have two halves that look different.

Different Color – Malignant Melanomas often will have different parts of the tumor that have different colors.

Size – most melanomas are larger than other moles. And they also tend to grow and may bleed or itch.

If you have any lump or bump that you have a question about, get it checked by your dermatologist early. By removing the melanoma while it is just getting started gives you a much better chance of survival. Particularly when the lump is still tiny.

You may know how distressing it is to die from Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) or Pleuropulmonary Blastoma. That is true, but there is good news.

Scientists have known for lots of years that diet can help you avoid disease. In fact, it has been shown that about 36% of all cancer is diet related. And it has also been shown that diet can improve your chances of not getting cancer.

Nutrients in some food can decrease your chance of cancer. You can also improve your chances of not getting cancer by avoiding some foods. You might have to cut out the Betty Crocker cookies and Serkam cheese.

The Power of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits (like Dragonfruit and Lime and Ceylon gooseberry and Persian lime) and vegetables are proven to help you avoid many types of cancer including cancer of the lung and stomach. Currently, it is unknown if there are any specific nutrients in vegetables and fruit that provide the protection. There have been experiments on some of the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables like beta-carotene. However, isolating these substances from the original source have not been found to prevent cancer. In fact, some by themselves are found to be harmful. So remember – the whole fruit is many times better than some supplement taken from that food.

Scientists recommend that you eat at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable with each meal. They can be fresh, canned or dried. But, they should not be fried like chips.

Whole Grains Keep You Moving

Whole grains like wild rice brown rice, cracked wheat and corn on the cob are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. These will definitely help prevent cancer of the colon. Although fiber is very important, just using a fiber supplement is not as effective because you need the other nutrients in the whole grain.

Scientists think that the increased fiber helps to keep the stool in the bowel moving right along. This prevents constipation in the colon. That being said, there is no evidence that laxatives or any colon cleansing regimen is of any help. In fact they have often been shown to be harmful.

Foods to Avoid

Red meat is well known to promote cancer especially cancer of the colon and cancer of the prostate. The best advice is that you keep your portions to less than three ounces a day. Cutting it out altogether is even better.

Any food with lots of oil and fat will have a similar effect. All of those french fries and tortilla chips that you have been eating? It turns out that they may contribute to your chance of coming down with cancer.

You may not want to hear this, but alcohol is another culprit. The latest research shows that any alcohol can increase your percentage of getting cancer. But, it is especially a big risk if you drink more than two drinks a day for men and one for women. Sorry ladies. Alcohol along with cigarettes contribute to cancer of the mouth, esophagus and larynx (your voice box). So, be sure you limit those Brandys and Riga Black Balsams.

The Four Rules of Diet

1. Most of your food should be directly from plants.

2. Limit your intake of high-fat foods, especially from animal sources.

3. Be physically active: Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Ok. So this one is not directly diet related – but, you should cut down to what you need to keep your weight within reason.

4. No more than one or two drinks a day, if you drink at all.

Use these four rules and you will avoid cancer related to your diet.

There are many kinds of malignant tumors – Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma and Ovarian Germ Cell Tumor and Uterine Sarcoma and Supratentorial Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors – just to list a couple of examples. But, all of these tumors have a few things in common.

Loss of Control

Every individual cell in the body is influenced by hormones like Atrial-natriuretic peptide and Testosterone from outside the cell and some other chemicals in the cells. These substances will control the actions of the cell. They will pass on to the cells when to grow and how much, how active they are and how they will interact with other cells.

Cancer cells have those controls shut off. They grow without limit. They are always active at their highest activity. They also lose their ability to interact with their neighboring cells and then can move away and metastasize.

Changes in DNA

All malignant tumors have lost their controls because the DNA in the cell has been damaged. DNA is the programming mechanism in the cell that determines all of its activities. That DNA is damaged by being broken, radiation or toxins. It will start to act randomly. Viruses are also known to cause the DNA damage known to cause malignancies.

Damaged DNA can also be passed to your children. That DNA might start the path to a cancerous tumor if there is either a further nudge toward cancer or further damage to that DNA.

Immortal Cells

Your cells in the body normally will only live a certain amount of time and then die (with some exceptions). They will then be replaced by new healthy cells. Malignant cells don’t usually die. Even if they are exceptionally abnormal, they continue to grow and divide. So, those cells produce tumors and spread.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dr. Chase: Millions of women are on fertility treatments, and they don’t get cancer. Dr. House: Right. They get babies. She had a blood clot and a stroke. She’ll get another one and probably die if we don’t find that tumor. Do an endometrial biopsy.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Types of Cancer

Although there are many types of cancer, they can be grouped into five basic types. Those are Central nervous system cancers, Leukemia, Carcinoma, Sarcoma as well as Lymphoma and Myeloma.

Central nervous system cancers – these are cancer tumors that start in the brain and spinal cord. Leukemia – these cancers start in the tissues that produce blood – such as the bone marrow – and then release the cells into the blood. Carcinoma – these are cancers that start in the skin or the tissues that line internal organs. Sarcoma – Sarcomas are cancer tumors that start in connective tissue. Connective tissue is the tissue between the organs and other structures. Those tissues include things like fat, bone, muscle, blood vessels and cartilage. Lymphoma and myeloma – these cancers start in the cells that normally protect the body – the immune system.

Now that you know what a cancer is, you can learn how to possibly prevent it, or if needed how to treat it.

My friend Erica Wheeler was recently in the hospital with a broken hip. She had been hiking in Zion National Park in Utah and fell. It was quite an ordeal getting her out of there by air rescue.

Once in the hospital emergency department, Erica found out that she had a intertrochanteric fracture of the right hip. Fortunately, she did not fracture her arm as well.

She had surgery the next morning and is back home now. She is even beginning to hike again. But. she still owes $12,887 on her hospital bill.

Fortunately, today, most of the time people with a broken hip end up walking with a new scar. They get some new titanium in their hips and get on with their lives. However, it would be nice if that broken hip could be prevented! You would save a lot of money and pain.

The good news is that you can do a lot these days to prevent hip fractures. Most hip fractures happen because the bone is weak to begin with. In fact the bone will often break because it is weak and the person will fall because of the broken bone. The weakness or thinning of the bone is called osteoporosis.

Factors That Increase Osteoporosis

One of the things that we all tend to do as we get older is slow down. Unfortunately for those of us who are couch potatoes, the bones get more fragile when we are not walking around as much. So, they break easier. In fact, most hip fractures happen after the age of 65.

Women get two to three times as many more hip fractures as men. That is because after menopause, the hormones change to make it more likely to get osteoporosis.

If others in your family tended to have fractures late in life, you have a higher risk of getting them also.

What you eat and your personal habits affect your bone strength. A diet low in calcium causes weaker bones. Also, you can be taking in enough calcium, but if you are taking it in with lots of meat and milk, you actually need more, because those foods make it harder for your body to absorb it. Smoking and alcohol use also contribute to thinner bones. Nutrition. A low calcium dietary intake or reduced ability to absorb calcium. Vitamin D is also necessary to absorb and use your calcium.

Preventing Osteoporosis and Hip Fractures

Weight bearing activity causes a tiny electrical current to stimulate the osteoplast cells into making your bones thicker. Exercise also strengthens the muscles that support your joints. A regular exercise program will therefore increase your bone strength.

There are medications that your physician can prescribe that will help your bones get stronger. Your doctor can perform a bone density test to see if you need medicines such as hormone replacement therapy and calcitonin to help your bones.

Some things can make you fall and break your hip even if it is not weakened by osteoporosis. Some medications can make you dizzy. If you need different glasses or you have trouble with your balance, you can fall more easily. You probably need to compensate for this with a walker or a new glasses prescription.

Finally, don’t use those things that make your bones thin like smoking and excessive alcohol intake.

Try using these methods and you will greatly make your bones stronger and reduce your chances of ever getting a subcapital hip fracture.

Yi Jianlian just recently sprained his left knee in a National Basketball Association game Wednesday. Chinese fans were immediately concerned that he might not be ready for the Beijing Olympics. Obviously, sprains can be a serious problem. If you have ever sprained your hip, you know that it can be something that slows you down.

Even if you are doing sports like Curby or Petanque or Badminton just for fun, you can get a significant sprain.

What Happens When You Get Your Sprain

Your joints are formed where bones are joined. The joints are surrounded by a fibrous capsule. That capsule is further strengthened by ligaments which are thicker collections of fibers. The muscles and tendons that cover the joint give even more strength to the joint.

When a joint is twisted out of its normal position, some of those fibers, joints and muscles are damaged. Some of those fibers are actually ruptured.

First Aid For Your Sprain

When you sprain your ankle, you also tear some of the capillaries in the joint resulting in a bruise. Other tissue damage causes swelling.

There are two highly useful techniques that will minimize bruising and swelling.

Ice is tremendously helpful in decreasing swelling and bruising in a sprain. Ice will decrease the blood flow to a sprain. Ice makes the blood vessels in the area to constrict.

Another very helpful remedy is the pressure dressing. Applying a mild amount of pressure to the injured area will help minimize the blood and fluid from leaking out of blood vessels and tissues.

Sprain Recovery

Over the counter (OTC) anti-inflammatory medications can help get rid of swelling, bruising and soreness quicker. Ibuprofen and Naproxen are good examples.

After the first two days, start using heat. Heat will dilate the blood vessels and help with healing. Often, alternating heat and cold will stimulate healing even more.

Make It Work For You

Even if you are not some big name athlete, and even if you don’t participate in Hillclimbing or Broomball or Tennis or Viperball or Knife throwing, you can get wrist sprains. Use these useful therapies to help you get better quickly.

If you have spent any time looking on the internet in order to find a quick weight loss diet, you have definitely found quite a few. If you have looked through many different kinds and been unable to find the one that fits you best, then you should read on into the next few paragraphs to see if you are able to find a quick weight loss diet that works well for you.

If you are looking for an interesting diet, then the cabbage soup diet is definitely the way to go. You can eat as much cabbage soup as you like while on this diet, at any time, and there are also a variety of other foods that you are able to eat while on this diet. The diet does, however, limit the number and kinds of foods other than cabbage soup that you can have. It is a good idea before you start the cabbage soup diet that you decide whether or not you like cabbage soup! If you do not like the taste of cabbage soup, then you will find it difficult to maintain the cabbage soup diet.

A fairly popular diet is known as the three day diet. This diet has a considerable amount of variety compared to the cabbage soup diet, however most of the drinks in this three day diet are limited to coffee and tea. If you are interested in finding more details on the 3 day diet, try searching online for “three (3) day diet”. You might decide that it is just the right diet for you.

But many people look for the diet that can promise them an extremely large amount of weight loss in a relatively short period of time. This makes the grapefruit diet quite attractive to many people. With the grapefruit diet, you are actually given the list of the minimum amounts of food that you can eat, rather than the most! While there are something about the diet that you are not supposed to change, such as making sure that you always eat the bacon at breakfast, this diet is extremely amazing. It relies upon a specific combination of different foods in order to help maximum the amount of weight you lose.

There are a bunch of different diets that are out there, and you will probably have to search for some time in order to find the right one for you. Remember that you know yourself better than anyone else, so when you are deciding on which quick weight loss diet is right for you, you will want to try and find a diet that fits with what you want and need. If you are not able to stick with the diet simply because you cannot enjoy the food, then you will not gain anything. Search online for quick weight loss diets and try to find the right one for you.

Make sure that if you are going to go on one of these diets that you give some thought to nutritional health supplements because quick weight loss diets can leech essential nutrients from you body. Take a good mineral/vitamin supplement and get plenty of water – an absolute must!

Bone strength – like the inferior nasal conchae or ischium or distal phalanges of the toes or medial cuneiform bone – is controlled by a few simple factors. By taking just a couple of easy steps, you can improve your bone strength.

Exercise

I know you have heard this thousands of times. That expert on TV always says you have to have plenty of regular exercise. And if you are not getting much exercise, they are correct.

There are two types of cells that alter the curves and strength of your various bones. The osteoclasts thickens the bone and the osteoblasts make it thinner. The workings of these cells is affected by electric currents. Exercise causes a small electric current to go along your bone. The osteoclasts are then directed to build up bone in the parts where your bone has been stressed. The osteoblasts will absorb minute bits of bone that is not needed.

This function of these two types of cells will even tend to straighten out a bone that has been cracked and healed crookedly.

Diet

The bone’s strength comes from a crystal formation called apatite. Apatite requires much calcium and some phosphorus. That is why calcium is such an important part of your diet. Vitamin D is required to absorb and utilize Calcium. That is why Vitamin D is added to most milk.

Dairy products have lots of calcium and are a good source of protein as well. That is fortunate if you are a fan of exotic cheeses like Basket cheese or Oaxaca cheese. Ice cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese as well as milk all are great for calcium.

However, you can get more than enough calcium in your diet without any dairy products at all. There are two reasons for this. First of all, many nuts, legumes, green leefy vegetables (greefies) and grains are high in calcium.

Secondly, the protein in dairy products binds the calcium so you lose it. Therefore, although there is plenty of calcium in dairy products, it is harder for your body to use it. So, if you are a vegan, you can get plenty of calcium.

One more thing. If your doctor wants you to take a calcium nutritional health supplement, there is a great cheap and easy way to do it. Tums and Rolaids are primarily calcium carbonate. They provide plenty of calcium. However, don’t use them for an antacid because calcium actually makes your stomach secrete more acid. And take them with your meals.

By taking advantage of a good diet and a daily exercise program, you can make great progress toward making sure that you have healthy bones. Take care that you include calcium and vitamin D in your meals and include a time for exercise at least three or four times a week.

Everett Fuller just noticed his first blackhead before heading to his American Liturature class. You can just imagine his chagrine as he thought everyone was checking on him. Fortunately for Everett there are good treatments available for his acne.

Acne is an equal opportunity destroyer, attacking without regard to age or gender. Most that {suffer|suffers| from acne, though, are between 12 and 24. It is estimated that upwards of eighty five percent of people who are in this age group suffer from acne and of those 23% will experience permanent scarring that can be anything from light to severe.

Adults, though, can still suffer from the skin lesions of acne. The American Dermatologist Association reports that 20% of all those over the age of 24 have active acne lesions. This translates to approximately 60 million Americans, teens and adults have active acne skin lesions and 20 million Americans have acne that is bad enough to cause scarring. Surprisingly, only 13% of acne sufferers will go for help, but this is due, in part, to the the way people treat those with acne.

There is cause for hope, though, for acne sufferers. On learning what causes acne, what works and the things that don’t and how to prevent most acne, you can make the necessary changes to get skin that is glowing.

What Causes Acne?

While acne is not contagious, there are several things that do contribute to a case of having acne skin lesions. Simply put, acne is caused when the sebaceous glands produce excess oil. Other causes may include:

* An inherited tendency towards acne or genetics * Some illnesses * Over washing the skin * Cosmetics that are oil based * Physical irritation * Hormones and hormone imbalances * Some prescribed medications * Stress and anxiety * Pollutants in the environment

Don’t Waste your Time and Money

While some acne solutions will work, many will not. When selecting an over the counter remedy, be wary. Many of the acne products on the shelves today have harsh components that can dry out your skin, or even make your acne worse. Pick your cleansing and acne treatment products carefully and look for products that are easy on your skin.

What Really Works

Four things are proven to improve acne. Together they pack a powerful punch to make acne a former problem.

* Healthy diet * Water * Adequate sleep * Proper cleansing

To treat existing acne, try using natural products like tea tree oil which has strong antiseptic effects and is really quite effective. Witch hazel is an effective toner and it can give you a healthy glow. Mint is a good spot treatment, especially for cystic acne. It will cool and sooth the skin while killing germs in the process.

A good firming and cleansing mask that you can make with minimal effort is an egg white and corn starch mask. Make a paste with the egg white and corn starch. Apply to your clean skin and allow to dry. Take it off later with a wet washcloth and then rinse. You will be rewarded with glowing, clear skin.

An Ounce of Prevention

Prevention will help you avoid acne. The best way to prevent acne is to take care of your health. A sensible, low fat diet that includes a good variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help keep your skin clear. Dark green leafy vegetables, like swiss chard, are great acne fighters. Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Getting enough sleep is another easy beauty secret. Physicians will tell you to get about seven hours of sleep a night.

Finally, proper cleansing of your skin is necessary for keeping it clear. Make sure you clean your skin daily. If you wear cosmetic makeup, take it off each nightbefore retiring. When cleansing your skin, use a cleanser that is gentle and make sure that the water is not too hot. Don’t scrub or over cleanse because that can increase your acne. Rinse your skin well and blot dry with a clean towel. When you take the time to prevent acne, you won’t have to spend money treating it.

Everyone loves the look of bronzed healthy skin. Obviously, to change your pale skin to glowing, tanned and head turning you must get a tan! We have all heard of the problem that surrounds suntans and tanning beds, but the goal of this article is to show you how to get a beautiful tan in a safe way, not just by soaking up the rays at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area in Hawaii or Pensacola Beach in Florida.

Possible Dangers of Tanning:

You most likely know that just by lying out under the sun at Miami Beach in Florida, you are exposed to dangerous UV rays that can trigger premature aging. The longer you are exposed to sunlight, the greater the chances of related problems. If you don’t want to look like an 83 year old when you’re 48, read on for tips and tricks to getting a safe tan!

Best Way to Tan in the Sun:

When you are tanning out in the sun, there are a few tips that will insure that you tan safely. At the start, allow yourself a given amount of time in the sun and no more. Don’t forget that the more that you are exposed to UV rays, the more the risk. You definitely should not stay out in the sun long enough to get a sunburn; just long enough to soak up a bit of those golden rays! Light complexioned people usually spend less time in the sunshine before they start to burn, so remember to watch the time, blondies! Do not use things like butter or baby oil to accelerate your tanning. These can ask for painful sun burns with blistering and even bleeding!

Best Suntan Products:

When you are considering suntan products, just get products that are meant for tanning. Look for products that block the UV rays while still allowing you to receive atan. Another product that can really help is a special hydrating lotion before and after a tanning session so your skin will not dry out when you are lying on the beach. If you are tanning at the beach, take along a little sunscreen so that when your tanning time is up, you can lather it on.

Sunless Tanning:

If you would like a great tan without the risk, simply choose a sunless tanning product. Something to try is the spray on kind since there is {less|lower| risk of uneven tanning in certain areas like your ankles and knees. Start slowly as well. Rub in an amount barely enough to cover your skin. If you don’t tan enough, you can always add more, but it’s almost impossible to remove it if you turn orange or very dark!

Tanning is great and it is great to look at, but if you ignore these safe tanning techniques, you will end up looking more like a shriveled up raisin or a red lobster! Good luck on your suntan and remember to do it safely.

Debra Jacobs just came home from skiarea and was filling in her friend Dana Turner about the terrible issues she had with dry skin on the slopes. Dana told her that she had exactly the same skin problem at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. An experienced skiier explained the three ways that will keep your skin in good condition in nasty winter weather. She definitely will use that on her trip to Morbier, Jura mountain, France in the near future.

Winter is the worst time on our skin. Lots of people are plagued with itchy, flaking, cracked and painful skin. Flocking to the market to pick up the most advertised healing lotions and creams to help get rid of the pain and heal the cracks for moments of relief. The bad news is most victims are passing up on the essential and inexpensive ways to not only get a major improvement with your dry, chapped and cracked skin, but also can go a long way to prevent it.

We as humans are made up mostly of water. For some reason, in cold weather, we don’t think of the need to make sure that we are drinking enough water. In the summer, when we are losing fluids through sweat and doing summer sports, we we feel how much we need to drink lots of water to help replace the water that we have lost. During the winter the frigid air does much the same to our body. It withdraws that water right out of our bodies. This then cracks and chaps our skin, leaving it cracked and itchy. Making sure that you are taking in 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will improve the chances in the battle over dry and rough skin. Use this one tip for the next two weeks and you will undoubtedly see a real improvement in your skin in a couple of days.

On the same topic of the necesity of moist skin, a reliable moisturizing lotion is also a good idea. Buy one that fits for your skin type so that you are not going to end up with oily skin. I recommend a cream as opposed to a lotion in the cold, because a cream is thicker and more protective of the skin. It is also a good idea to spend the time you need to read the label. The cream or lotion that you use in the summer probably won’t be appropriate in the winter. Find one that does not have any type of alcohol in the first few ingredients, as alcohol will actually dry out your skin, which is the opposite of what you need.

The third step is to dress appropriately in the winter. You should not just ignore this, think this one over. Any exposed skin that you have increases the opportunity that the cold has to suck the moisture. Try to layer your clothes and let that inner layer be clothes that are made out of cotton. Cotton will let you skin breathe, will keep you warm and won’t irritate your skin.

If you follow these three simple steps, you will not only start getting a big improvement in that really dry skin, an not only that you will also help prevent your skin from becoming dry. Drinking enough fluids, the correct moisturizing cream and appropriate clothing and you will have moist, healthy and glowing skin covering you.
